michael wilson styled hair in portsmouth, new hampshire, for over 15 years before following a lifelong dream to live and work in new york city. while there, he completed a two-year apprenticeship with famed hair salon bumble and bumble, refining his craft while expanding his creative horizons.
in addition to bumble and bumble, michael has trained with vidal sassoon, l’oréal, and american crew. he has styled hair for new york fashion week and travels to the city every five weeks to maintain his nyc clientele.
after several years, michael decided to return to the seacoast area. the result is modern love, a space rooted in education and creativity. he collaborates with clients to find a style that fits their look and lifestyle, and especially enjoys a big transformation.
melinda has trained with aveda in minneapolis, arrojo studios, jo blackwell-preston and the left brain group. she has extensive experience in portsmouth’s top salons, fashion events and runway shows, and worked with michael prior to his new york residency. melinda returns to the chair full-time after earning her masters and working in education, guided by her passion and a core of longtime clients. melinda loves working with color, connecting with people and discovering styles that match their lives and desires.
tanya’s first love was cutting hair, and she’s been in a committed relationship with it for over 23 years in the seacoast area. after graduating from empire beauty schools, she spent a year training under the venerable louis terramagra in portsmouth. she’s continued to hone her craft through education clinics with noted talents john sahag, robert lobetta, and nick arrojo. in addition, she keeps her styling skills, knowledge and love alive through regular education classes with the likes of eufora and kevin murphy, and is a certified goldwell colorist.
part craftswoman, part chemist, tanya has a devoted clientele and always welcomes new clients to her chair. she’s passionate about working with clients to find a look to suit their current and evolving tastes.
michael deardorff specializes in men’s haircutting and grooming. he also offers color services from subtle gray blending to full-coverage permanent color. he completed the cosmetology program at the aveda institute new york city in 2007. since graduating, he has moved back and forth between photo editing and cutting hair, always bringing a keen eye for detail to both. when opportunity brought him to maine, michael decided to focus on men’s grooming and completed master barber training at the new england school of barbering. now at modern love, he enjoys connecting with clients and seeing how they can transform in the chair.
